CREATING STYLE
A look into the basics of what men should know about what they wear.

By Isaac Styles

Style is class of imagination and idiosyncratic individuality expressed in one’s actions and tastes. Along with image, comes style and style is not just about how a man lugs himself, but more importantly how he carries everything he is donning. Forty percent of one’s style comes from within and is illuminated by external factors which constitutes sixty percent of your style; your clothing and how you combine colors and texture to give off flair of fashion.

Image is very important and men should start (if they have not) considering image more, because according to a survey, we are judged over 93% on our nonverbal communication alone. The way a man communicates; such as his walk, posture, motions, facial expressions, sit, talk, smile and most especially his aura all constitutes half of his style. The rest is impacted by visual indicators; his wardrobe; to esteem your style, everything in your wardrobe should matter; to look vibrant and ‘alive’ is determined by the colors of the wardrobe in relation to your personal coloring. And to look intelligent and organized is affected by your clothing being ‘in order’ and fitted for your specific body type.

Since the intrinsic characteristics in us that makes up almost half of one’s style can’t be taught, there are some great fashion essentials to assist all men in maximizing the effect of the external factors that makes up 60% of style. I am going to start with men’s wardrobe basics in this article:

Wardrobe Basic Essentials:

A man should have at least 2 suits in wool and blend, colors should be of Black, Gray, Dark Blue, and Dark Brown: if you only need a suit a couple of times a year, you're glad to have it on hand when those occasions arise. Navy or gray suits are classic and neutral and can be dressed up or down. You can even wear the blazer with khakis or jeans.

At least 4 shirts in cotton and blend: White dress shirts look good on just about everybody. They look sharp and are versatile but should not be worn as a casual shirt. A casual shirt such as a polo or button down is a must-have to wear with jeans or other casual pants.

2 pairs of shoes, either brown or black color: These can be worn with khakis, jeans and your suit. This is an essential combo. Before buying brown, get black. I think you will find you get more mileage out of them, especially when attending more formal or evening functions.

3 plain ties and 2 belts to match the suit colors: Solid ties are easy and versatile. If solid isn't your thing, try a classic diagonal stripe. Having several tie patterns on hand will ensure you are prepared for interviews, weddings and evening events.

1 all-weather trench coat: An overcoat doesn't necessarily mean a long coat. It also means 3/4-length or car coat length. This item really finishes an outfit and can be worn with everything including jeans. And everyone needs a coat in winter, right?

A man should have at least 2 sport coats in solid and tweed: A dark blue or dark brown blazer is good for all year round and easily coordinates with khakis and other items. If that bores you, try a tweed sport coat but also keep in mind that tweed is really only useful in fall and winter. Either way a blazer or tweed sport coat holds a look together.

A plain gold watch with chain or leather band. This is a must-have, I personally prefer leather band.

Wear over-the-calf socks so you won’t show any leg when sitting. (This is especially for WORK)

Besides these basics, in whatever else you have in your wardrobe, make sure colors are coordinated together very well and know what colors to wear in different weathers. The color that shows your face ‘first’ when looking in a mirror is the color group that enhances you the best. Bear in mind that any combination of primary colors (red, blue, yellow) will sparkle.

Coordinating Color:

Warm Colors Cool Colors

__ Brown __ Black
__ Orange-red __ Blue-red
__ Cream __ White
__ Olive green __ Kelly green
__ Coral __ Blue-pink
__ Gold __ Silver

Golden and yellow tones Blue, gray and rose tones
Spring and Autumn Palettes Winter and Summer Palettes

COLOR EFFECTS
There are many theories on the moods created and symbolic meanings about colors and what they mean. We learn to identify specific colors with symbols. Moods are created by colors also. Let's look at a few:

COLOR MOOD MESSAGE
Red: hot, excitement happiness, blood
Blue: cool, leisure dignity, truth
Yellow: joyful, cheerful glamour, brightness
Orange: stimulation, defiant harvest, thoughtfulness
Purple: stately, dignified wisdom, victory
Green: cool, in control security, peace
Black intense, anxious mystery, power
Brown melancholy, neutral protection, atonement
White joy, light, cold purity, innocence

Words of Advice:

Don’t wear white colored shoes in any season but summer. This takes away attention from your face and by that diminishes your personality. And please, when you do wear white shoes, make sure you are donning white colored trousers or a little off-white color (cream) or a blue fitted jeans.

What you wear should accentuate your body figure. Wearing baggy or oversized clothing is a BIG NO NO. After you have aged and developed tires around your guts and stomach, then you can be wearing baggy sacks or whatever.

You cannot let the fear of being labeled a ‘FAG’ repress your individuality when it comes to fashion and style. Play with colors, don’t follow trends but also don’t look weird. The secret is perfecting the NORM by adding a little of your own touch.

Overall, radiate a subtle confidence not arrogance (there is a thin line between the two). Wear a smile and have a firm handshake, these are your best accessories.
