Who is Saheed Osupa and Why is His Music Important?

I was introduced to Saheed Osupa’s music by another musician called BaddyOsha, who feels that Osupa is a brilliant lyricist. At first, I wasn’t too familiar with his sound, but after diving into his discography, I quickly realized why so many people hold him in high regard. Osupa isn’t just another Fuji musician—he is a master of words, a poet in his own right, and a storyteller who captures the realities of life in a way that few can.

Who is Saheed Osupa?

Born Akorede Babatunde Okunola, Saheed Osupa is a Nigerian Fuji musician whose career has spanned decades. He was born on August 7, 1969, in Ibadan, Oyo State, though his roots trace back to the Yoruba-speaking regions of Nigeria. Fuji music, which evolved from the Islamic Were music tradition, has long been a dominant force in southwestern Nigeria. Osupa has become one of its greatest ambassadors, blending traditional sounds with deep lyrical content.

While Ayinde Barrister is credited as the pioneer of Fuji music, Osupa has elevated the genre to new heights with his intellectual and poetic approach. Often referred to as the “King of Fuji Music,” his career has been marked by a legendary rivalry with Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, another Fuji icon. Regardless of differing opinions, Osupa’s mastery of Fuji is undeniable.

The Fuji Lyricist Keeping Yoruba Music and Wisdom Alive

Osupa’s lyrics are not just words set to rhythm; they are deep, thought-provoking messages that resonate with listeners. His songs are filled with Yoruba proverbs, wisdom, and philosophical reflections, making his music a source of guidance for many. Whether addressing social issues, personal growth, or morality, his words carry weight.

Beyond the lyrics, his work plays a crucial role in preserving Yoruba culture. At a time when Afrobeats and pop music dominate the Nigerian music scene, Osupa remains one of the few artists keeping Fuji relevant for younger generations. By consistently performing in Yoruba, he ensures that the language and its traditions remain vibrant in modern music.

His music also serves as a voice for the people. Throughout his career, he has fearlessly addressed political issues, corruption, and societal struggles, making his songs more than just entertainment. They are reflections of the realities many Nigerians face, sparking discussions and inspiring action.

Despite his deep-rooted connection to Fuji, Osupa has not been afraid to evolve. His ability to blend Fuji with hip-hop and other contemporary sounds has introduced the genre to new audiences. Younger musicians, including Baddy Osha, have drawn inspiration from his work, proving that Fuji music can adapt while maintaining its traditional essence.

A Lasting Legacy

With over 40 albums, Saheed Osupa’s influence is undeniable. His storytelling, wisdom, and cultural pride have cemented his place in Nigerian music history. While he may not always receive the same global attention as pop artists, within Nigeria—especially among Yoruba music lovers—he is celebrated as one of the greatest lyricists of his generation. His music is a powerful reminder that tradition, storytelling, and wisdom will always have a place in modern African music.
