Leicester top at Christmas, Van Gaal to be sacked, Chelsea’s win and more weekend talking points
European Football Talking Points from the Weekend – Will Van Gaal be Sacked?
Written by Funsho Ogunbeku (@Footycabal)
Here are the weekend highlights.
Tottenham in top 4
Just last week Tottenham hotspurs` 16 game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end against Newcastle, but their response yesterday was impressive as they swept aside Southampton at the St. Marys, a 2-0 win was sealed by Harry Kane and Dele Alli which moved them into top 4 ahead of Manchester united. This Tottenham side are really going about their business silently and diligently.
3 in a row for Bournemouth
Bournmouth yesterday won their 3rd game on the bounce with victories over Chelsea, Man.United and now Westbrom, The Cherries bagged a late 2-1 win at the nine-man Baggies after Charlie Daniels scored a penalty with three minutes left. They are now 14th, 5 points above the relegation zone, when you win at Stamford bridge and at the Hawthorns against a Tony Pulis side, then you mean business because these defenses aren’t that easy to break down and lets not forget United had d best defense in the league when they were defeated.
Chelsea beat Sunderland as Hiddink Watched
Chelsea came out top in the relegation 6 pointer against Sunderland, while the newly appointed Interim Manager watched alongside Drogba and Abramovich. The Pressure was on the players to perform as the fans even booed some of the Chelsea stars for their role in the Mourinho sacking. Ivanovic Chelseas worst player this season scored first with further goals from Pedro and Oscar while former Chelsea boy Borini got the consolation for Sunderland. With or without Mourinho, i think Chelsea were due for a win in this game, we will know in the coming weeks if they
ve really turned the corner or they are off form and have just been hiding under the canopy of a fall out with Mourinho.
Leicester city top at Christmas
Nobody could have imagined this except for one guy that won 5000 pounds after predicting and placing a bet he must be able to see the future. Leicester city continue their fairy-tale season with a 3-2 win over Everton at Goodison park courtesy of a Mahrez brace. Lukaku was also on the score sheet to continue his stride towards Vardys record after scoring in his 7th successive premier league game. Leicester city are really beginning to look like champions, what makes their story even more incredible is the fact that they were 20th on the table at Christmas 2014, that is definitely a record. It would be the greatest achievement ever should Ranieri lead this team to the title but a couple of months could make a huge difference as we
ve seen with Chelsea, so let`s keep our fingers crossed.
United lost again; Van Gaal to be sacked as Mourinho wait in the wings
Manchester united are now win-less in their last 5 games in all competition losing the their last 3. They lost 2-1 through goals from Jerome and Tettey with Uniteds onyl shining light getting yet another goal for them which wasnt even enough to earn them a point. Mourinho has an eye on the Old Trafford job and after being sacked by Chelsea, he
s expected to be appointed in replacement of Van Gaal soon.
Gary Neville`s Valencia troubles
Neville is still searching for his first win as the manager of Valencia cf, Valencia have not won a single game since he was appointed now 4 on the bounce though he has only been in charge of 3 officially. The former Manchester united player and sky sport pundit is finding his first managerial post tough as he was held to a 2-2 draw yesterday by Getafe. Gary Neville is now getting to see that it is a lot easier to analyze the performance of a coach than to be the coach.
